Tobin's early experience as a skateboard photographer and cinematographer in the streets of San Francisco, had a great impact on his gift of capturing the decisive moment. As a member of the skate scene it came natural to Tobin to capture moments as he saw them; raw and real, with a twist of humor.
Tobin got his start doing unit stills when his mentor Larry Clark wanted to meet skateboarders and gather materiel for a movie which later became Kids as well as Ken Park. Tobin's photographs have been exhibited worldwide including The Luggage Store, Deitch Projects, Thread Waxing Space, White Columns, Institute for Contemporary Art Philadelphia and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.
